12. Connections with industry in the training program
Several of the research training activities within HYKE are done in collaboration with industry, as an example we mention the annual
CEMRACS :
The"Centre d'été Mathématique de Recherche avancées en Calcul Scientifique" (CEMRACS) brings together engineers from industrial research centers, scientists from universities and freshly graduated or post-doc students. It is hosted by the CIRM (Centre International de Recherches Mathématiques) near Marseille. Each year, the topic and the organizers of the school change, but the method remains the same. It is basically a summer school of scientific computing with emphasis on mathematical aspects. This summer school is splitted into two periods : First, the participants attend a series of lectures at ASCI (Laboratoire de calcul scientifique intensif du CNRS) in Orsay near Paris, for about two weeks. Then, the participants move to CIRM in Marseille for 6 weeks, and start a research period, in small teams, on projects defined in cooperation with industrial partners. i.e. up to half of the participants come from companies. These projects permit to start new fruitful collaboration between industry and academia. For the students, it is an great opportunity to work on really applied problems, and to develop useful contacts.
The financial support of this action is equally distributed between public funding (CNRS, SMAI,...) and industrial contracts (for example CEA, ONERA, EDF, Thomson, Dassault, IFP, Alcatel, Aerospatiale...). For more information : http://www.cirm.univ-mrs.fr/
Important financial support from the hyperbolic and kinetic TMR has been given in the last three years and the French HYKE teams have become the main organizers of the CEMRACS : in 1999 F. Coquel (F1) and S. Cordier (F2), in 2000 R. Abgrall (F3) and in 2001 by C. LeBris (F2).
In the course of this network, similar activities all over Europe will be coordinated or launched. To this end, the IAB will help in organising links and cofunding such programmes.
Relations with industry advisory board (IAB): The IAB ensures optimal use of the existing links with industry, in particular the industrial aspects of the training. The IAB hence assists the TC with advice on orientation of the training and on opportunities of collaboration/co-financing of training activities by industry.
Members : S. Mas-Gallic (head)(f)(F1), M. Anile (I3), H. Neunzert (D1), G. Allaire (F2), H. Engl (A1)
The IAB creates also a link with the ECMI (European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry), to the French CEA (Atomic Energy Commission) and other companies. The head of the IAB, Sylvie Mas-Gallic, has also been working outside academia during her career. include("../bas.php"); ?>
